Members of Point Park University’s United Student Government are preparing for the second annual Pioneer Community Day on Saturday, April 14.
On Pioneer Community Day, USG as well as other on campus groups, residence floors, alumni, administrative departments, athletic teams, schoolsand offices volunteer their time to various organizations in the Downtown and surrounding community.
This year, volunteers will be working with various organizations that help homeless children, help clean up the environment and speak out about rape. USG contacted some of the same organizations they worked with last year, and received some suggestions from the vice president of the university.
"We chose projects that we thought would be most beneficial for large groups of students to do,” USG Press Secretary Rachel Norris said in a phone interview Monday evening.
Volunteers helping the organizations Lawrenceville United, Riverlife and the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy will clean up litter, paint over graffiti and garden.
The Early Learning Institute, Homeless Children’s Education Fund and Habitat for Humanity will be receiving help from volunteers with various projects including helping with the construction of a home, setting up haunted house Hundred Acres Manor for a children’s event and doing crafts and projects with children.
Pittsburgh Action Against Rape will also be receiving help from Point Park volunteers with a “creative works” project. Volunteers will be helping create promotional material for the organization.
Some volunteers will be pairing with the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership to do various projects right in the heart of Downtown.
In addition to donating their time, all students are welcome to donate blood on Pioneer Community Day at the blood-drive held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in 701 Student Center.
There will also be an acoustic concert series playing in the Village Park from 1-3:30 p.m. that day.
Dance for Dreams, a dance marathon benefiting Make-A-Wish foundation, will also take place in the Village Park that evening.
In addition to a run-down of the Pioneer Community Day schedule, USG representatives were given an update on the status of the midterm grade proposal at Monday’s meeting.
At the faculty assembly meeting on April 2, faculty members voted to pass the recommendation that suggests professors provide students with midterm grades through Blackboard, PointWeb or one-on-one meetings.
