Any students longing to knock over some pins can have their wish granted at this semester's final free bowling night on March 27, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Brannan Lanes in McKees Rocks.
Interested students should assemble at the atrium before the buses depart at 6 p.m.
Senior sport, arts and entertainment management major Brandon Dean, who is running the intramural sports program this semester, recommends bowling for all students because of the game's accessibility.
"This is one of the best activities because anyone can do it," Dean said. He noted that while not every participant has the same level of success, "anyone can try."
Dean said that the turnout for the previous bowling nights - this will be the sixth for the year - varied, but that there have always been at least 15 students in attendance.
"It's usually 15-plus," Dean said. "The most we ever had was 45 kids."
Dean also assured that there will be enough lanes to accommodate 40 students without a problem and that Point Park University students have "first priority."
An added incentive to take part in the activity is a prize that will be awarded to the highest scoring male and female. Each will receive a $25 gift card that can be used anywhere in Station Square.
Daniel Bellavance, a senior sport, arts and entertainment management major who has attended all but one of the bowling nights this year, said he wishes more students would take advantage of the activity.
"It's free," Bellavance said. "There's free transportation there, free bowling, free shoe rental...everything's included. You'd always like to see more people just becauseā¦it becomes more competitive and everybody has a good time."
Bellavance noted that the skill levels of participating students varies. He said that his average score of around 150 is moderate outside of the Point Park bowling night, but places him in the "upper echelon" of bowlers there.
"There's girls and guys there, and we all compete together," Bellavance said. "So [the scores are] anywhere between 80 and maybe 170. It all varies on how people play from game to game and averages."
Bellavance remarked that despite the participants' varying skill levels, everybody enjoys themselves.
"It's a really fun time," he said. "It's a short bus ride over to the lanes. Everybody has a great time and you hate to see 9 [o'clock] come because you [have to] pack up and leave. I think everybody should come out and have a great time."
The event is paid for by Point Park's student activity's fee. It is one of 12 intramural sports and programs listed on Point Park's Web site. Other similar events that are slated to take place some time this spring include a table tennis tournament at the Rec Center, a billiards tournament, also at the Rec Center, and a cornhole/corntoss tournament in Alumni Park. The winners of these events will also win a $25 gift card for anywhere in Station Square.
Brannan Lanes is located at 407 Locust Street in McKees Rocks.
